The river of Santa Eulalia becomes a raging torrent
An extraordinary natural phenomenon in Ibiza
When you think of Santa Eulalia, you usually associate the town with sun, beaches, and Mediterranean serenity – hardly anyone associates it with a river. But last weekend, an impressive spectacle unfolded: The River of Santa Eulària, the only river in the Balearic Islands, became a raging torrent due to the heavy rains. The water rushed in thick, reddish-brown waves under the old stone bridge. Pont Vell and cascaded towards the sea.
Hundreds of onlookers at the Pont Vell
As early as Sunday afternoon, hundreds of people flocked to the riverbanks to marvel at the rare natural phenomenon. Many captured the scene on their smartphones, while others simply watched silently as nature suddenly displayed its power. The soundscape was overwhelming – the thunder of the water echoed through the valley, demonstrating the power that can unfold in such a short time.
Consequences of the storm
The heavy rainfall triggered flooding and minor landslides in many places. In Santa Eulalia, parts of the riverbed overflowed their banks, roads were flooded, and a vehicle was swept away by the current. Several dozen emergency calls were received reporting flooded areas. The municipality has since announced that it will officially classify the area as "severely affected by the storm."
Across the Riu de Santa Eulària river
The River of Santa Eulària is not only the namesake of the city, but also a piece of living island history. He is considered the only natural river in the entire Balearic Islands. Its source is in the north of Ibiza, below the Puig d'en Sopes near Sant Miquel. From there it makes its way around 17 Kilometer Long Way through fertile valleys, olive groves and almond plantations before flowing into the sea on the east coast.
For centuries, the river was an important part of life on Ibiza. It fed water mills and irrigated fields where grain, vegetables, and fruit were grown. Remains of old irrigation systems and mills are still visible along the river. The famous Pont Vell, a bridge made of natural stone with three arches, was built in the Middle Ages and is now a listed building.
During the summer months, the Riu often dries up almost completely, transforming into a quiet riverbed. Only after exceptionally heavy rainfall—like the recent storm—does the river revive. The water then turns a bright rust-red color, as the surrounding iron-rich soil is swept away.
Today the area around the river is part of the popular River Route, a three-kilometer-long walking trail that introduces visitors to the history, nature, and culture surrounding the River Riu. Here, visitors will encounter not only traces of times past, but also a diverse range of wildlife—from dragonflies and frogs to kingfishers, which use the river as their habitat.
When the Riu awakens
What happened this weekend in Santa Eulalia was far more than a storm—it was a striking moment in which the island showed just how vibrant it is. The river that gives Ibiza its only "Riu" emerged from its slumber and transformed into a roaring force of nature.
For many of those present, it was an experience they will not soon forget: a piece of natural history that transformed the otherwise peaceful city into a spectacle of water, sound and movement.

Flightright – When passenger rights simply work
Flight delays, cancellations, or overbookings are unfortunately not uncommon. However, many passengers are unaware that they are entitled to compensation in such cases – and even fewer know how to pursue it. This is precisely where Flight right comes into play: a pioneer among legal tech companies and market leader in the field of air passenger rights.
Specialist in EU passenger rights since 2010
Since its founding in 2010, Flightright has pursued a clear goal: to help passengers assert their rights against airlines – quickly, easily, and risk-free. The legal basis for this is the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004, which, among other things, provides compensation of up to 600 euros for flight problems.
How Flightright works
Using the service is incredibly simple: Affected parties enter the key details of their flight online – within a few minutes, the system automatically checks whether a claim exists. If so, Flightright handles the entire process with the airline, including all legal steps. Even court proceedings can be conducted upon request – at no additional cost to the customer.
The highlight: Payment is only made if the claim is successful. If no payout is made, there are no costs. If compensation is successful, Flightright retains a commission from the compensation amount. This model ensures maximum fairness and transparency.
Retroactive up to three years possible
Many people don’t know that even flights that took place in the past can still be compensated – usually up to three years retroactively. It is therefore worthwhile to have older cases reviewed again.
How much is the compensation?
The amount of compensation depends on the flight route:
- EUR 250 for short distances up to 1.500 km
- EUR 400 for medium-haul flights between 1.500 km and 3.500 km
- EUR 600 for long distances over 3.500 km
This usually requires an arrival delay of at least three hours – or a flight cancelled at short notice for which the airline is responsible.
Why Flightright?
What sets Flightright apart is not only its fair success model, but also its impressive success rate of around 99% in legal proceedings. With over 600 million euros in compensation payments enforced Flightright is one of the absolute pioneers in Europe.
The provider also scores points with transparent communication: The status of the case can be viewed online at any time – conveniently from the sofa or on the go via smartphone.
For all those who do not want to be left with the damage
No one should forgo their right to compensation just because the process seems complicated. With Flightright, asserting your rights is child's play – without any stress, paperwork, or legal fees. Anyone who has experienced flight trouble can now easily protect themselves and have their compensation pursued professionally.
