Ibiza Diary: News from Saturday, August 16, 2025

The first day of the ground staff strike at Ibiza Airport was quiet, but now a second ground handling company, Menzies Aviation, has announced a wave of strikes. All-day walkouts are planned for six days in August, which could primarily affect airlines such as easyJet, Emirates, and British Airways. According to employees, the reasons are poor working conditions, delays in wage payments, and inadequate staffing. With around 6.400 flights scheduled for the holiday weekend, travelers are advised to check their flight status regularly and allow extra time.

• The traffic situation at the legendary Es Vedrà Mirador remains tense: Despite the opening of a new free parking lot for 200 cars, many visitors continue to park on the streets, partially blocking access routes for emergency vehicles. The chaotic scenes – vehicles traveling at walking pace, pedestrians in the middle of the road – demonstrate that the additional parking lot alone will not solve the safety problems. Critics point to a lack of controls and enforcement measures, which have not been improved so far. The town of Sant Josep is under pressure to implement sustainable solutions to avoid traffic chaos and danger in the future.

• Ibiza currently has two of Spain's ten most sought-after luxury properties: a villa on an 8.500 m² plot for €3,2 million and a rustic chalet for €3,9 million. The island's real estate market continues to grow, with prices rising by around six percent between 2024 and 2025, and prime locations now commanding over €10.000 per square meter. Hotel investments are increasingly shifting from five- to four-star properties, as the latter promise higher returns and already received 2025 percent of the funds in the first half of 59. The contrast between ultra-luxury, with nights costing €2.360, and simple campsites for €66 highlights the social divide on Ibiza.

• The Santa Eulària City Council has approved a €1,9 million project to renovate and improve Avenida de Cala Llenya. The underground sewage, drinking water, electricity, and telecommunications networks will be modernized along a 410-meter stretch. Also planned are a new LED lighting system, raised crosswalks, parking bays, seating areas, bicycle racks, and 32 new parking spaces, including those for electric vehicles and people with reduced mobility. The work is expected to take approximately five months and will help modernize the infrastructure and resolve water supply problems.

• Dua Lipa celebrated her 30th birthday in Ibiza with luxury, music, and Balearic flair. The singer spent the day enjoying a beach lunch at Club Jondal, a boat trip, and clubbing at DC10. In the evening, she stepped out in a spectacular Jacquemus outfit with sequins and cutouts. Family, friends, and a flamenco performance by Ibossim Flamenco made the party an unforgettable event.

• This morning, a car crashed into a guardrail on the Santa Eulària road at the Rotonda de Jesús intersection, leaving it severely damaged. The impact was so forceful that the guardrail was torn out and vehicle parts were scattered across the roadway. The accident caused significant traffic disruptions on this important route. Police secured the scene and diverted traffic.

• A forest fire was reported in Can Llucía near Sant Joan in the early morning hours and was completely extinguished by 5:15 a.m. The rapid response by Ibanat, the fire service, and emergency teams prevented it from spreading and kept damage to a minimum. However, the forest fire warning level for Ibiza remains high, and open fires and outdoor barbecues are prohibited. Authorities are urging the population to be vigilant, especially during the upcoming heatwave.

• For Ibiza and Formentera, three new heat warnings issued by the AEMET. On Saturday, August 16, an orange warning level is in effect, with temperatures up to 39°C, especially in the island's interior. On Sunday, August 17, it will get even hotter – AEMET warns of temperatures up to 41°C. A yellow warning level follows on Monday, August 18, with peak values of up to 37°C, which is why authorities and the public are urged to exercise extreme caution.

• At a sushi restaurant in Ibiza, guests were unexpectedly charged €12 for hanging their handbags on a hook. The waitress initially offered the service "friendly" but didn't emphasize that there would be an extra charge. After protesting, the guests finally received a correct bill without the item. Consumer protection authorities classify the practice as abusive because the additional charge was not transparently communicated.

• Spanish police have dismantled a suspected money laundering ring run by the United Tribuns biker gang and arrested a total of nine people. The investigation was triggered by the discovery of 675 kilograms of cocaine in July in a truck on the ferry between Ibiza and Valencia. During the two-year investigation, officers seized an additional 1,4 kilograms of cocaine and €XNUMX million in cash. Among those arrested is a former police officer who is accused of providing the gang with internal information.

• At Ses Salines Beach, the channel originally reserved for emergencies is increasingly being used as a secret mooring for small rescue boats. Residents of boats offshore regularly use it to disembark, do shopping, or dispose of trash. This frequently leads to conflicts with lifeguards and environmental watchdogs, who point out the closure. During peak season, dozens of dinghies pass through the channel, effectively turning it into an unofficial marina.

• For today, Saturday 16 August, an official Heat warning Level yellow for Ibiza and Formentera. Temperatures of up to 37°C are expected, especially in the island's interior. Authorities advise avoiding the sun, drinking plenty of fluids, and paying particular attention to at-risk groups. This means a very hot weekend is ahead.

• Tonight, the "Nits d'estels" series kicks off at the Cala d'Hort Observatory. Starting at 22 p.m., visitors can observe the starry sky for free. Further dates will follow throughout November. The event series offers a quiet alternative to the island's party scene.

• Last night, the sky above Ses Figueretes, Es Viver and Platja d'en Bossa was lit up by a 14-minute firework display, marking the festive end of the Festivals of the Earth Thousands of spectators watched the spectacle from beaches, viewpoints, and the old town. Around 150 kilos of powder were ignited directly from the beach this time, bathing the sea and coast in light and color. Police, firefighters, and the Protección Civil ensured a smooth event with a large security presence. Photo gallery with 45 pictures shows the most beautiful moments of the evening.

Flightright – When passenger rights simply work

Flight delays, cancellations, or overbookings are unfortunately not uncommon. However, many passengers are unaware that they are entitled to compensation in such cases – and even fewer know how to pursue it. This is precisely where Flight right comes into play: a pioneer among legal tech companies and market leader in the field of air passenger rights.

Specialist in EU passenger rights since 2010

Since its founding in 2010, Flightright has pursued a clear goal: to help passengers assert their rights against airlines – quickly, easily, and risk-free. The legal basis for this is the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004, which, among other things, provides compensation of up to 600 euros for flight problems.

How Flightright works

Using the service is incredibly simple: Affected parties enter the key details of their flight online – within a few minutes, the system automatically checks whether a claim exists. If so, Flightright handles the entire process with the airline, including all legal steps. Even court proceedings can be conducted upon request – at no additional cost to the customer.

The highlight: Payment is only made if the claim is successful. If no payout is made, there are no costs. If compensation is successful, Flightright retains a commission from the compensation amount. This model ensures maximum fairness and transparency.

Retroactive up to three years possible

Many people don’t know that even flights that took place in the past can still be compensated – usually up to three years retroactively. It is therefore worthwhile to have older cases reviewed again.

How much is the compensation?

The amount of compensation depends on the flight route:

  • EUR 250 for short distances up to 1.500 km
  • EUR 400 for medium-haul flights between 1.500 km and 3.500 km
  • EUR 600 for long distances over 3.500 km

This usually requires an arrival delay of at least three hours – or a flight cancelled at short notice for which the airline is responsible.

Why Flightright?

What sets Flightright apart is not only its fair success model, but also its impressive success rate of around 99% in legal proceedings. With over 600 million euros in compensation payments enforced Flightright is one of the absolute pioneers in Europe.

The provider also scores points with transparent communication: The status of the case can be viewed online at any time – conveniently from the sofa or on the go via smartphone.

For all those who do not want to be left with the damage

No one should forgo their right to compensation just because the process seems complicated. With Flightright, asserting your rights is child's play – without any stress, paperwork, or legal fees. Anyone who has experienced flight trouble can now easily protect themselves and have their compensation pursued professionally.

Check here whether you are entitled to money – and in the best case scenario, receive compensation soon
