Ibiza Diary: News from Saturday, September 20, 2025
Starting Sunday, September 28, lifeguards (socorristas) on the beaches of the Balearic Islands will go on an indefinite strike. This will affect Ibiza, Sant Josep, Sant Antoni, and the major tourist resorts of Palma and Calvià. The protests are directed against precarious working conditions, inadequate pay, excessive working hours, and a lack of housing. They are demanding a clear response from the Balearic Government, better conditions, and compliance with minimum legal requirements. It is still unclear how exactly the service can be maintained on the affected beaches and whether there will be exceptions or emergency services.
● The Cultural Center Can Ventosa in Ibiza is celebrating its 100th anniversary and is undergoing a major expansion. Two additional floors are planned, quadrupling the space for musical activities from 300 to over 1.200 square meters. The investment volume exceeds two million euros, and the tender process will open shortly. Modern classrooms, staff rooms, administrative offices, and a large rehearsal room for more than 100 musicians will be created. The expansion is intended to transform Can Ventosa into a "cultural and social heart of the city" and promote both education and music more effectively.
● Between 15 May and 15 September 2025, the police in Sant Antoni 91 arrests for drug offenses 49 cases involved the illegal sale of laughing gas ("gas de la risa"), and 42 others involved the trafficking of other drugs. The measures were part of the "Plan de Seguridad de Verano 2025," which includes increased controls in leisure and entertainment areas. Security politician Neus Mateu criticized the fact that many detainees are released after 24 to 48 hours, which complicates police work. Authorities are now calling for changes to the law to more effectively stop repeat offenders.
● A post by Erika P. has been shared in the Facebook group “Nice and Cheap Ibizain which she expressed her despair about the housing situation on Ibiza: residents were only given overpriced holiday apartments instead of permanent rental contracts. She wrote: "Pues que la mitad de ese dinero lo tengáis que gastar en medicinas" ("Maybe you spend as much on medicines as you earn in rent") - a sentence that sparked widespread outrage. Other users compared costs and wages abroad and on Ibiza, with many saying: "Ibiza no es Nueva York" - there are no cheaper outskirts here. Landlords and owners defend themselves with arguments such as high property prices and their own costs; critics accuse them of profiting from the housing crisis. The discussion shows how strongly the issue of housing theft ("housing crisis") impacts the everyday lives of many on the island.
• Spanish Social Affairs and Consumer Affairs Minister Pablo Bustinduy praised the Ibiza Consulate's activities in combating illegal vacation rentals and called on other politicians to follow suit. He said Ibiza has already taken measures that are showing results, unlike cases like those of José Luis Martínez-Almeida and Carlos Mazón, which he believes should be more closely aligned with Ibiza's model. Bustinduy stressed that his ministry is providing all the necessary tools to enable municipalities to act legally. The move comes shortly after it was confirmed that all illegal Airbnb listings have been removed in Ibiza. According to Bustinduy, the listing of illegal vacation rentals jeopardizes the right to housing and pushes families out of the regular housing market.

The gun turned out to be a fake, and the man was medically examined and taken to a psychiatric center. Flightright – When passenger rights simply work
Flight delays, cancellations, or overbookings are unfortunately not uncommon. However, many passengers are unaware that they are entitled to compensation in such cases – and even fewer know how to pursue it. This is precisely where Flight right comes into play: a pioneer among legal tech companies and market leader in the field of air passenger rights.
Specialist in EU passenger rights since 2010
Since its founding in 2010, Flightright has pursued a clear goal: to help passengers assert their rights against airlines – quickly, easily, and risk-free. The legal basis for this is the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004, which, among other things, provides compensation of up to 600 euros for flight problems.
How Flightright works
Using the service is incredibly simple: Affected parties enter the key details of their flight online – within a few minutes, the system automatically checks whether a claim exists. If so, Flightright handles the entire process with the airline, including all legal steps. Even court proceedings can be conducted upon request – at no additional cost to the customer.
The highlight: Payment is only made if the claim is successful. If no payout is made, there are no costs. If compensation is successful, Flightright retains a commission from the compensation amount. This model ensures maximum fairness and transparency.
Retroactive up to three years possible
Many people don’t know that even flights that took place in the past can still be compensated – usually up to three years retroactively. It is therefore worthwhile to have older cases reviewed again.
How much is the compensation?
The amount of compensation depends on the flight route:
- EUR 250 for short distances up to 1.500 km
- EUR 400 for medium-haul flights between 1.500 km and 3.500 km
- EUR 600 for long distances over 3.500 km
This usually requires an arrival delay of at least three hours – or a flight cancelled at short notice for which the airline is responsible.
Why Flightright?
What sets Flightright apart is not only its fair success model, but also its impressive success rate of around 99% in legal proceedings. With over 600 million euros in compensation payments enforced Flightright is one of the absolute pioneers in Europe.
The provider also scores points with transparent communication: The status of the case can be viewed online at any time – conveniently from the sofa or on the go via smartphone.
For all those who do not want to be left with the damage
No one should forgo their right to compensation just because the process seems complicated. With Flightright, asserting your rights is child's play – without any stress, paperwork, or legal fees. Anyone who has experienced flight trouble can now easily protect themselves and have their compensation pursued professionally.
