Ibiza Diary: News from Monday, September 22, 2025
SLUIZ Ibiza says goodbye for good: This week is the last chance to see the iconic Store in Santa Gertrudis to visit. Customers can still browse until closing and benefit from a 75% discount on the entire range. The eccentric concept store was a creative fixture on the island for almost two decades. After authorities ordered its closure in 2024 due to licensing and safety deficiencies, SLUIZ to operate smaller locations. Now it's finally over – a final chapter in Ibiza's history is coming to an end.

● The Ibiza airport starts one innovative circular economy initiativeUmbrellas left behind by travelers can now be collected free of charge at baggage claim. Instead of ending up in the trash, intact umbrellas will be collected and reused. The goal is to reduce waste and use resources wisely. Airport operator AENA This underlines its commitment to greater sustainability and more environmentally friendly operations.
• Formentera is planning new measures to combat the congestion caused by day-trippers, who drain resources but contribute little to the local economy. A fee, in line with legislation, is being considered, and reservations may be required in the future to regulate access to the Ses Salines Nature Reserve. The goal is to relieve pressure on popular beaches like Illetes and distribute visitors more evenly across the island. Since legal and technical assessments are still pending, implementation is not expected for some time.
● Today, Monday, September 22, 2025, at 20:19 p.m., autumn officially begins: equinox The sun crosses the celestial equator, and day and night are almost equal in length. From now on, the days shorten noticeably – by about three minutes daily. In the coming weeks, spectacular meteor showers await, such as the Dracónidas (October 8), the Oriónidas (October 21), the Leónidas (November 17), and the Gemínidas (December 14). Astronomical autumn lasts until December 21 and brings a new celestial season over Ibiza and Formentera for almost 90 days.
• The Vibra Hotels group plans to create 600 to 650 new employee housing spaces over the next two years to alleviate the shortage of accommodation in the tourism sector. Around 420 spaces are already available, including the converted former Hostal Royal in Sant Antoni. The conversion of Hostal Piccadilly into a residence for 80 employees is also planned. The company aims to provide a total of 1.500 housing solutions with dignified standards. CEO Antonio Doménech emphasizes this as "the greatest challenge of our time" and calls for joint solutions between the private and public sectors.
• Santa Eulària plans to reduce the property tax (IBI) for rural properties from 0,47% to 0,45% in the September plenary session. This will benefit more than 5.300 cadastral entries, and the municipality will forgo approximately €100.000 in revenue for the benefit of its residents. The tax has already been reduced twice since 2022. Families with three or more children will also receive a 90% discount, and properties with electric car charging stations will receive a discount of up to €1.200 for two years. City Councilor for Finance Miguel Tur emphasized that the goal is to "keep the money in the pockets of the citizens."
● Around 35 volunteers helped out at the weekend World Clean Up Day Over 260 kilograms of garbage were collected on the beaches of Sant Josep. In Cala Tarida alone, 200 kilograms of waste were collected – including a mattress, kitchen scraps, and even a dismembered palm tree. In Cala Vadella, 26 kilograms were collected, and in Ses Salines, 40 kilograms. Particularly alarming was the number of nearly 10.000 cigarette butts on just one beach. Environmental Councilor Felicia Bocú praised the volunteers' efforts as a crucial contribution to protecting the coast and natural areas.
• Ibiza lost more than 4,3 billion liters of water due to leaks in its water mains in 2024 – an amount equivalent to the annual consumption of 94.000 people. Sant Josep, in particular, had the worst losses, with a loss rate of 34,5%, followed by Santa Eulària with 27,2%. The causes range from burst pipes to defective seals. The Alliance for Sustainable Water Management is calling for immediate emergency plans and investments in the next six months. Instead of building new desalination plants, the dilapidated network must first be modernized to protect groundwater reserves.
● The club Sabine's Cats has to temporarily suspend its work. The reason is a lack of permits for rescuing and rehoming cats, which will now be obtained in cooperation with the city administration. Therefore, no animals can be taken in in the coming weeks. The team emphasizes that no one is to blame for the situation and asks for understanding and patience. The goal remains to be able to help homeless cats on Ibiza again soon.
• Autumn is coming: AEMET is forecasting rain and thunderstorms for Ibiza and Formentera starting Tuesday. Daytime temperatures will fall to between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius, while the nights will be more moderate. The first showers or thunderstorms could occur Tuesday morning, especially near the coast. There's still a slight chance of scattered rain on Wednesday, especially in the morning. From Thursday onwards, the weather looks set to calm down somewhat, with better prospects and generally drier skies expected.
● The award of the construction works for the new apartments with limited rent (VPL) in Puig d'en Valls The project could be approved by the Santa Eulària City Council this September. Two companies are bidding for the contract; a pending report is currently being awaited before the decision is made by the plenary session. Plans call for between 70 and 120 apartments with 51 to 106 square meters of usable space in the S'Olivera area. The municipal council has allocated two plots of land, each with an area of 3.000 square meters, for this purpose and established a 75-year right of use (derecho de superficie), after which the land and building will return to public ownership. Construction is expected to take three years once work begins.

• The opening of the new Parador de Ibiza is being delayed, as evidenced by a series of new tenders approaching completion. A contract for the maintenance of nine elevators, two vehicle lifts, a stairlift, and a platform elevator is currently being tendered. In parallel, various remaining works remain, including outdoor landscaping, buffet equipment, outdoor furniture, and additional construction work, with a deadline of 60 days after the contract award. The small annual maintenance contract costs approximately €19.361—a sum that underlines how many details still need to be resolved. This raises questions about whether the announced opening date can actually be met.

Flightright – When passenger rights simply work
Flight delays, cancellations, or overbookings are unfortunately not uncommon. However, many passengers are unaware that they are entitled to compensation in such cases – and even fewer know how to pursue it. This is precisely where Flight right comes into play: a pioneer among legal tech companies and market leader in the field of air passenger rights.
Specialist in EU passenger rights since 2010
Since its founding in 2010, Flightright has pursued a clear goal: to help passengers assert their rights against airlines – quickly, easily, and risk-free. The legal basis for this is the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004, which, among other things, provides compensation of up to 600 euros for flight problems.
How Flightright works
Using the service is incredibly simple: Affected parties enter the key details of their flight online – within a few minutes, the system automatically checks whether a claim exists. If so, Flightright handles the entire process with the airline, including all legal steps. Even court proceedings can be conducted upon request – at no additional cost to the customer.
The highlight: Payment is only made if the claim is successful. If no payout is made, there are no costs. If compensation is successful, Flightright retains a commission from the compensation amount. This model ensures maximum fairness and transparency.
Retroactive up to three years possible
Many people don’t know that even flights that took place in the past can still be compensated – usually up to three years retroactively. It is therefore worthwhile to have older cases reviewed again.
How much is the compensation?
The amount of compensation depends on the flight route:
- EUR 250 for short distances up to 1.500 km
- EUR 400 for medium-haul flights between 1.500 km and 3.500 km
- EUR 600 for long distances over 3.500 km
This usually requires an arrival delay of at least three hours – or a flight cancelled at short notice for which the airline is responsible.
Why Flightright?
What sets Flightright apart is not only its fair success model, but also its impressive success rate of around 99% in legal proceedings. With over 600 million euros in compensation payments enforced Flightright is one of the absolute pioneers in Europe.
The provider also scores points with transparent communication: The status of the case can be viewed online at any time – conveniently from the sofa or on the go via smartphone.
For all those who do not want to be left with the damage
No one should forgo their right to compensation just because the process seems complicated. With Flightright, asserting your rights is child's play – without any stress, paperwork, or legal fees. Anyone who has experienced flight trouble can now easily protect themselves and have their compensation pursued professionally.
